Label Changes Make Dow AgroSciences Acetochlor Products Easier to Use

Sweet corn use added; Restricted Use Pesticide designation lifted

Indianapolis, IN - October 25, 2007

Growers will experience more use convenience and cropping flexibility with acetochlor products from Dow AgroSciences thanks to recent label revisions accepted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The label updates include the addition of acetochlor use on sweet corn, the lifting of Restricted Use Pesticide (RUP) limitations and a relaxation of crop rotational restrictions.

Sweet Corn Label

SURPASS®, KEYSTONE®, KEYSTONE® LA, FULTIME® and TOPNOTCH® herbicides are now labeled for use in sweet corn. With the addition of sweet corn to the product labels, these products can be applied to all major types of corn, including field corn, production seed corn, silage corn, sweet corn and popcorn.

Lifting of RUP Language

SURESTART™, SURPASS and TOPNOTCH herbicides are no longer RUPs and licensed applicator restrictions have been removed from the product labels.

"These relaxed restrictions on SURESTART, SURPASS and TOPNOTCH will make it easier and more convenient for retailers and growers to use SURESTART, SURPASS and TOPNOTCH for dependable weed control in corn," says Bruce Maddy, product technology specialist for Dow AgroSciences.

More Cropping Freedom

Rotational crop restrictions also have been relaxed for numerous crops on the SURESTART, SURPASS and TOPNOTCH product labels, giving growers greater crop rotational flexibility. Previously, sorghum and soybeans could only be planted the next spring following applications into corn.

Now, many more crops may be planted the following spring for each of the following products.

  • SURESTART - alfalfa, barley, clover, dry beans, lespedeza, oats, pea, popcorn, rye, sorghum, soybean, vetch and wild rice can be planted the following spring after application. In addition, the rotation interval for wheat is just four months; potatoes, sunflower, sweet corn and tobacco are 12 months; and sugar beets, canola and all other crops are 26 months plus a successful field bioassay.
  • SURPASS® EC and TOPNOTCH® herbicides - alfalfa, barley, buckwheat, clover, dry beans, guar, kudzu, lentil, lespedeza, lupin, millet, pearl or proso, oats, pea, potatoes, rye, sorghum, soybeans, sugarbeets, sunflower, trefoil, tobacco, triticale, vetch and wild rice can be planted the following spring after application. Wheat is just four months.

The following crops may now be planted 15 months after applications of KEYSTONE, KEYSTONE LA and FULTIME herbicides: alfalfa, barley, dry beans, lupin, millet, pearl or proso, oats, pea, potatoes, rye, sugarbeets, sunflower, tobacco, triticale, wheat and wild rice.
