Strongarm® Herbicide Receives Special Need Registration for Tropical Spiderwort Control in Georgia Peanuts
Indianapolis, IN - April 20, 2005
A 24(c) Special Local Need Registration has been accepted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use of Strongarm® herbicide for postemergence control of tropical spiderwort in Georgia peanut fields.
Tropical spiderwort is a noxious, invasive weed that has become a serious pest in many Georgia agricultural production areas. In peanuts, dense populations of tropical spiderwort have the potential to cause severe yield loss and interfere with harvest efficiency. To date, infestations have been documented in 30 Georgia counties.1
For tropical spiderwort control, Strongarm should be applied at 0.45 ounces per acre in a broadcast spray when the weed is in the one- to two-leaf stage of growth and is actively growing. Optimum control will be obtained by applying Strongarm under favorable growing conditions.
Applications may be made from cracking to the initiation of flowering, or bud stage, but no later than 30 days after planting. Some temporary yellowing or chlorosis of peanut foliage may occur after application, depending on environmental and crop growth factors.
Strongarm may be applied alone or in a tank mix with other postemergence herbicides registered for use in peanuts. All applications of Strongarm must include a nonionic surfactant at one quart per 100 gallons.
No more than 0.45 ounces of Strongarm may be used per acre per year in any combination of registered application options – preplant incorporated, preplant surface, preemergence through cracking or postemergence.
Minimum interval for rotation to cotton is 18 months for postemergence applications. Intervals for other crops vary. For more information, visit www.StrongarmHerbicide.com.
