New DELEGATE™ Insecticide from Dow AgroSciences Receives Federal Registration

Broad-spectrum Insecticide Offers New Mode of Action for Controlling Codling Moth

Indianapolis, IN - September 28, 2007

Dow AgroSciences announced today that it has received federal registration of DELEGATE™ WG insecticide, an essential, effective solution for the control of codling moth and a broad spectrum of damaging insect pests in tree fruits and tree nuts. Containing the new active ingredient spinetoram, DELEGATE effectively controls codling moth through a unique mode of action that, unlike many current insecticides for codling moth, does not disrupt populations of most beneficial insects.

Registered under the Environmental Protection Agency's Reduced Risk Pesticide Initiative, DELEGATE is labeled for use in a variety of high-value crops, including pome fruit, stone fruit, grapes, citrus, tree nuts and pistachios. It controls a wide variety of insects, including codling moth, Oriental fruit moth, leafrollers, leafminers, thrips, tufted apple budmoth, pear psylla, cherry fruit fly, green fruitworm, peach twig borer, navel orangeworm and more, with suppression of apple maggot and plum curculio.

"We're excited that we've been able to bring pome fruit growers a new tool to control codling moth that fits within Integrated Pest Management programs," says Lee Conway, marketing manager for Dow AgroSciences.  "Apple producers, in particular, have long been looking for new solutions to control codling moth beyond organophosphates and neonicotinoids, and DELEGATE delivers that through a targeted approach."

DELEGATE maintains populations of most beneficial insects, including ladybeetles, bees, lacewings and parasitic wasps - without flaring mites - through a targeted Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach.

DELEGATE™ WG insecticide also provides a short re-entry interval. "DELEGATE is ideal for early season sprays when producers are extremely busy because its short re-entry interval allows them to treat insect problems without delaying other important tasks," says Brian Olson, product technology specialist for Dow AgroSciences.

DELEGATE WG also has short preharvest intervals of just one day for citrus; seven days for pome fruits, cherries, plums and prunes; and 14 days for peaches and apricots, which also makes it an effective late-season spray for broad-spectrum insect control prior to harvest.

On certain pests, DELEGATE provides up to two weeks of superb residual activity with a use rate that's lower than most currently available insecticides. It also contains minimal personal protective equipment requirements.

Olson recommends using DELEGATE™ WG for broad-spectrum insect control and rotating with INTREPID® 2F insecticide when targeting worm pests. Rotation of insecticides is strongly encouraged to maintain the long-term effectiveness of these valuable insect control tools and manage against resistance.

"Because DELEGATE contains a new mode of action for codling moth control, it provides growers an option to target the control of codling moth and a broad number of other insects. Older chemistries for codling moth control have been showing reduced effectiveness due to resistance development, while hurting populations of beneficial insects," Olson says.

"Fruit growers face an increasingly competitive market for their products, and DELEGATE allows them to protect the marketability and value of their crop," Conway adds. "Dow AgroSciences is committed to equipping fruit growers with innovative solutions like DELEGATE that provide the highest level of targeted pest control."
